Home - a self directed residency, 2021
Home is a three month self-structured home residency program where I live and work in Wiradjuri country. I will create a new body of work including paintings and drawings. My work will continue being informed by my background in ecological sciences and my current domestic life. To begin, I will take stock of the work I have created at residencies in Indonesia, France and Australia. Throughout this residency, I will connect locally e.g. sharing my practice at the April Art in the Park, Bathurst event. This residency will climax with my first solo exhibition in Sydney, at Project Gallery 90.

" ... Most of us have been forced to stay home for longer periods than usual through 2020-2021, reflecting on our own domesticity and interior worlds, only dreaming of the places we might rather be and there is a sense of something haunting, a subtle trauma that runs through these works, which adds to their mystery. A looming threat of change and movement lives alongside the stillness of Mason’s staged scenes, possibly a reflection of the difficulties of the past year or more that the world has endured. It was during this period after all, that these ‘Paintings within Paintings’ were produced as part of Mason’s ‘HOME’ residency, funded by Create NSW through Orana Arts ..."

"... In looking at past work, I found when I re-drew or re-painted, the act helped me remember ideas or feelings or learnings or understandings gained from the time before. With this work, I remember painting the original painting featured in this painting and being enlivened by making loose line marks that created the bag and shoes of the Bilby. And so I continue this play echoing loose lines into the marking and the making of the chair. And I like the disruption left where the wall interrupts the legs of chair. Sometimes painting is a joy. ..."
