Still Home, 2020
Works
Statement
Still Home is Nic Mason's exhibition as part of a show with Alison Mackay at Project Gallery 90. The title references both the shared experience of many isolating at home in these Covid-19 times and the actuality of these works, where the interior of Nic Mason's home is captured in still moments.
For these works Nic Mason set up her easel in the hallway, around the doorway and over the dining table. The domesticity of the scenes matched the process where she painted away as her children schooled at home.
The slowness of this time is witnessed where the paintings of this series become paintings within the paintings growing on the wall. Capturing light, shadows, reflections, compositional and architectural elements and loved objects within the home are all clearly of interest but so too is what is outside the immediate scene. Through the placement of a chair, an open door, a light filled window or a darkened room the viewer is invited to imagine something more.
