Orana Arts Inc and the STAA
The Ironbark Residency located at The Railway Hotel in Stuart Town, in the Central West of NSW on Wiradjuri Country has developed from a partnership between Orana Arts Inc and the Stuart Town Advancement Association (STAA). Two Orana Arts Inc Co!Lab members Therese Gabriel Wilkins and Nic Mason were recipients of the 2023 Ironbark Residency. These two artists were in-residence together working on their own projects in The Railway Hotel. Both delivered a public presentation on their Ironbark Residency projects on Wednesday 22 March on day 5 of their residency at The Railway Hotel in Stuart Town.
During this residency Nic was open to influence of this place and time whilst contemplating her family stories linked to this region. She wrote in her blog of her time there and she spent time experimenting and playing, commencing several creative projects within the walls of The Railway Hotel including:
- site specific installations documented through photography and video of:
- The Draft in The Railway Hotel - playing with draft elements in The Railway Hotel enlivened by the plastic sheet supplied by the Residency and
- The Fan as an artefact - situating parts of the broken fan around The Railway Hotel
- photographic series Within the Railway Hotel - placing her self walking through and standing within spaces of The Railway Hotel
- painting interiors of The Railway Hotel with its objects, stillness, light, shadows and linkages from one room to the next
- charcoal drawings of the interiors and the elements within The Railway Hotel

From Nic's Ironbark Residency Blog ...
" ... I think of the elements interacting whilst I was there, of the mouse that nibbled my banana, of the water spewing forth unexpectedly from the wall tap and piddling to dry in the shower, of the fridge door opening and not just once, of the fan expunging its blades, of my autocorrected notes of hidden to forbidden, of the radio grey noise of the middle of the night, and of the plastic sheet breath and dance throughout this place. I am so thankful to all at the STAA who have been so responsive with their care of this place and us here. I am enlivened to keep working on the projects that I have started there. With just five nights there it went like the blink of the eye. I am enthused to head back there. " |
