Artist Statement for Happenings at Michael Reid Murrurundi
My 'Happenings' body of work at Michael Reid Murrurundi extends from my previous bodies of works, notably my solo exhibition of the previous year, Cycle at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery.
I regularly re-paint previous paintings of mine into my new paintings within the still life and interior genres of painting. I continually question what I am doing and creating. How can I use my experience and voice to play with and even upend these genres of the western tradition? How can I create Australian art that is contemporary? How can my processes energize my creating? Through the act of painting and the theatre of conceiving and assembling the still life / interior set ups in front of me, I am enlivened and new ideas surface.
Through painting older paintings of mine into my new paintings new dialogues and linkages are created from one work or idea to the next. The still life tradition is used to mull over western binary conventions separating nature and culture and the inanimate and animate. In my "Happenings' body of work, my studio bookshelf or a window to elsewhere sets an abstract backdrop where chairs mirror each other, paintings within the paintings interact in their new surroundings and a striped electrical cord snakes around a corner. An iterative curious conversation is suggested between things in my life: (banksia cones and kitchenalia, children’s toys, nanna blankets and other inanimate objects) where, I offer you the viewer some almost-but-not-quite-stories in psychologically charged painting scenes.
