Nic Mason - Artist Statement 2019
My art practice is anchored in my background in ecological sciences and my current rich domestic life with family and creatures including Nim my four legged friend.
I value working within interdisciplinary projects such as the Art of Threatened Species project, a collaboration with Orana Arts and the Office of Environment and Heritage. My research process includes fieldwork with specialists such as at a threatened brush-tailed rock-wallaby population site and going behind the scenes at the Australian Museum.
Much of my current work investigates: in what ways can still life become be employed within a painting practice to encourage viewers towards an alertness to ecological relationships. These investigations have been buoyed through my Honours Year studies at University of New South Wales, Art & Design (COFA).
I am interested in the possibilities of enticing new ways of thinking through connection and engagement with art.
